Glass Reduction with H2

This is one possible way to get oxygen for Lunar mare basalt.

(Solid/Gas Interaction)

  1. We’ll have to bring the hydrogen in from Earth (or asteroids) unless we scavenge some from the regolith (with all the trouble that will cause).
  2. Parameter check list:
    1. Number of rare chemicals
      1. One – hydrogen
      2. We’ll have to bring the hydrogen in from Earth (or asteroids) unless we scavenge some from the regolith (with all the trouble that will cause).
    2. Danger of chemical reagents
      1. Hydrogen gas is flammable. But I doubt Homesteaders will store hydrogen as a gas because the molecule is so “slippery”. That means hydrogen gas molecules are so small that they can escape through solid materials.
      2. A much better way to store hydrogen is as water.
    3. 1 SLH Atmosphere
    4. Able to be constructed/maintained locally
    5. Ease of maintenance
    6. Simple
    7. Durable
    8. Energy input
    9. Heat output
    10. No hazardous materials are produced.
    11. Efficiency
    12. Processes that extract more than just oxygen are preferred.
    13. Weight/mass/volume
    14. Other uses for the reagents
      1. Hydrogen has a lot of other uses, including making water.
