This is one possible way to get oxygen for Lunar mare basalt.
(Solid/Gas Interaction)
- We’ll have to bring the hydrogen in from Earth (or asteroids) unless we scavenge some from the regolith (with all the trouble that will cause).
- Parameter check list:
- Number of rare chemicals
- One – hydrogen
- We’ll have to bring the hydrogen in from Earth (or asteroids) unless we scavenge some from the regolith (with all the trouble that will cause).
- Danger of chemical reagents
- Hydrogen gas is flammable. But I doubt Homesteaders will store hydrogen as a gas because the molecule is so “slippery”. That means hydrogen gas molecules are so small that they can escape through solid materials.
- A much better way to store hydrogen is as water.
- 1 SLH Atmosphere
- Able to be constructed/maintained locally
- Ease of maintenance
- Simple
- Durable
- Energy input
- Heat output
- No hazardous materials are produced.
- Efficiency
- Processes that extract more than just oxygen are preferred.
- Weight/mass/volume
- Other uses for the reagents
- Hydrogen has a lot of other uses, including making water.
